Many museums charge for admission while others are free. Do you think the advantages of charging for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?在線咨詢

Along with the rapid economic advancement, there is a growing need for recreation facilities such as art galleries and museums. Among all of these recreational places, museums have definitely become one of the most prevailing destinations for entertainment to people nowadays. But is it really necessary for museums to charge people for visiting? This essay will elaborate on the strengths and weaknesses of charging for admission when it comes to visiting a museum.

Charging for admission benefits museums from many levels. The most obvious advantage brought about by this policy is that it can collect more revenue for the museum. It is believed that every year a great deal of money is poured into museums for maintenance. It needs money to hire enough people and train them to do the cleaning as well as artifacts protection. It also needs money to introduce high-technology as well as to upgrade the facilities so as to better serve the museum visitors. These could not be achieved with only limited budget allocated by the government. What is more, the museum can limit the number of visitors flooding into the museum by requiring them to pay beforehand. To further clarify this, fewer visitors are beneficial to the protection of artifacts displayed in museums. This is because many art works are thousands of years old and are subjected to damage due to exposure to light and oxygen. If there were fewer visitor, there would be less damage to these artistic works antiques in particular.

Nonetheless, the disadvantages generated by this cannot be ignored. To start with, not everyone is able to afford the ticket to museums. To those from poverty-stricken families, they struggle even with basic needs like food and clothes let alone paying to visit a museum for entertainment. But museums are places where people get enlightened and their horizon broadened. By charging for admission, it deprives the poor of these benefits. Moreover, the purpose that we establish museums is to promote our traditional culture so that more people will cherish our traditions and carry forward our culture. Paying prior to visiting a museum contradicts with this goal as this policy to a certain degree limits the amount of visitors to a certain museum. Therefore the aim can only be half achieved, which will be a pity to the country as cultural power can be a great catalyst to economic development. The more people visit a museum, the wider the relevant culture can spread nationwide and worldwide.

Overall, it seems that advantages exceed the disadvantages arising from this policy as we should make sure the artifacts are intact before discussing the possibility of promoting traditions and customs. But what we should bear in mind is that in order to maximize the quantity of people desiring to visit museums, museums should only charge a small fee or even better provide free admission for students and senior citizens.
