Police arrested an ultra-Orthodox Jew accused of stabbing and wounding six people onThursday in a gay pride march in Jerusalem — two of them seriously.

Officers identified the assailant as Yishai Schlissel, recently released from prison after serving10 years for stabbing participants in a similar gay parade in Jerusalem.

Mr Schlissel is said to have pulled a knife from his jacket and run after the young marchers asthey walked through streets decorated with rainbow flags, leaving bleeding victims on theground bore he was pinned down by police.

Two marchers who had been stabbed in the chest were reported to be in serious condition.

In recent public statements, Mr Schlissel made no secret of his hostility to the gay pridemarchers — raising questions over whether police had been adequately prepared to securethe parade.

The annual gay pride march in Jerusalem has raised strong objections from ultra-OrthodoxJews and is held under heavy security.

Ultra-Orthodox protesters have denounced what they call the diling of the holy city, dubbingthe march “the parade of abomination”.

Mr Schlissel received a 12-year sentence for stabbing three people in a gay pride march inJerusalem in 2005, but his sentence was reduced by two years. Israeli media said he had beenreleased three weeks ago.

A large gay pride parade is held annually in Tel Aviv, and Israeli officials often tout theircountry’s tolerance toward gays and lesbians as a sign of Israeli democracy in a regioncharacterised by authoritarian rule.

“Individual freedom of choice is one of the basic values of Israel,” Benjamin Netanayahu, theprime minister, said in a statement denouncing the attack. “We must ensure that in Israelevery man and woman will live in security in any way they choose.”
